Candied Orange

Candied Orange



  • 1 orange, sliced in 1/8 inch pieces horizontally (along the equator) 
  • 2 inches ginger, peeled and sliced 
  • 1 cup granulated sugar 
  • 1.5 cups water
  • Star anise 
  • Rosemary 
  • Flaky sea salt, such as Maldon


  1. Dissolve sugar in water over medium high heat in a wide sauce pan. Avoid stirring, as this contributes to the sugar crystalizing 
  2. Add oranges, ginger, rosemary, and star anise 
  3. After 15 minutes, flip fruit over 
  4. Reduce heat to medium low 
  5. Cook until fruit is translucent and the liquid has reduced down to a thick syrup
  6. Transfer to parchment paper to cool and sprinkle with flaky sea salt 
  7. Reserve syrup for cocktails, yogurt, or tea!
